Ectemnius maculosus is found in eastern North America in both Canada and the United States, and in temperate Eurasia. Small solitary wasp (ca. 10 mm in length); the head is square-shaped, black; eyes black; antennae with yellow scape and dark-brown flagellum; thorax black; abdomen is black with four yellow bands, interrupted medially; femurs black; tibia and tarsi yellow; wings brown. Adults nectar on flowers, e.g., Narrowleaf Meadowsweet (Spiraea alba). Nests are built in the soft pith of twigs; larvae feed on paralyzed flies supplied by females. Active mid-summer to late summer.
